I would like to start off this month’s MP Report by saying “thank you” to the constituents of Carleton-Mississippi Mills. It is always a lot of work going through an election campaign and I couldn’t have done it without so many great supporters, friends, and family by my side. I would also like to send special thanks out to Justin MacKinnon, Jake Cole, and Paul Arbour for putting their names forward and for participating in the electoral process. Our region once again had one of the highest voter turnouts in the country. Although the national voter turnout was low (59.1%), I am happy to report that our area once again turned out with 68.9% of eligible voters coming out to the polls. I would obviously prefer that every eligible voter came out to vote for their preferred candidate but am very pleased that so many did. Getting Back to Work Throughout the election campaign, I had the opportunity to reconnect with many people and hear their suggestions on what they would like their government to do for them. Many people across Carleton-Mississippi Mills are concerned about the economy in particular. With a renewed mandate to govern, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has committed to continue working to protect the Canadian economy. This is our first priority as government. We need to make sure that Canadians feel comfortable investing here at home and feel confident in their nation’s economy. I am pleased that Prime Minister Harper has made it clear that he is going to continue being proactive in managing our country’s finances this fall. Many constituents are also concerned about their families’ safety and security. That is why we are going to move ahead with tougher legislation to prevent crime and to punish criminals’ behavior when they harm innocent Canadians. I am very pleased with the new role that the Prime Minister has asked me to fill as Chief Government Whip. I am excited to deal with the new challenges and demands that will be put to me during the Parliamentary Sessions. Remembering Those Who Fought and Died for Us On November 11th, please join me in remembering those who fought and died for us and our freedoms. Across Carleton-Mississippi Mills there will be many Remembrance Day Ceremonies and I would strongly encourage you to come out and show your support. Remembrance Day is a solemn day when we can all remember just what is important to us and be thankful to those who ensured we can enjoy our freedoms. I will be attending a number Remembrance Day Ceremonies across the constituency. Should you wish to find the location of your local ceremony, I would encourage you to contact your local Royal Canadian Legion.
