Getting tough on Organized Crime

OTTAWA, February 26, 2009- Today, my colleague Hon. Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, introduced legislation to get tough on organized crime.

“I am proud to be part of a Government that puts the safety and security of Canadians first,” said Minister Clement. “The safety of Canadians is one of the Government's most serious responsibilities and that’s why we are continuing to move forward on our agenda to crack down on violent crime.”

Our Government’s proposed new laws target gang violence and organized crime. They will address serious organized crime and gang issues including gang murders, drive-by shootings and additional protection for police and peace officers.

If passed by Parliament, the Bill will:

Make murders that are connected to organized crime automatically a first-degree offence, regardless of intent.

Target drive-by and other reckless shootings, that involve complete disregard for the life or safety of innocent people; and

Better address assaults against police and peace officers.

“All Canadians deserve to be protected from gang violence and dangerous criminal activities. Every time that innocent bystanders get hurt or killed from drive by shootings, or other gang related activities, we share in the tragedy of the families and we all reflect on how unfair this violence is,” said Minister Clement. “People want action on crime now and that is what we intend to deliver.”
